I Solemnly Swear? - February 7, 2016

This sermon was recorded on Sunday, February 7, 2016 and delivered by Jennifer Harris Dault, associate pastor of St. Louis Mennonite Fellowship.

The scripture referenced in this sermon is from the Book of Matthew, chapter 5, verses 33 through 37.

(33) "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.' (34) "But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God (35) or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING. (36) Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. (37) But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes ' or 'No, no'; anything beyond these is of evil.

In "I Solemnly Swear?" Jennifer addresses "The Sermon on the Mount" as it pertains to oaths, swearing, and keeping of promises. Raised in the Baptist faith, Jennifer is now a Mennonite pastor, and her insight addresses these issues from many angles.

What does it say about our culture that we need affirmations of our honesty in everyday speech, and if we must announce we are telling the truth, what are we suggesting about ourselves the rest of the time?

May we all live the kind of lives where oaths are not necessary, but instead be the sort of people that are known for our truthfulness.

We thank you for listening to this podcast, extend a special thanks to Jennifer Harris Dault, and invite you to join us each week at First Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
